Richard III
Killed at Battle of Bosworth Field on 22nd August 1485.
Thanks to the success of the bad press Richard received from Sir Thomas More, Henry VII and ultimately William Shakespeare, much of what people believe about Richard is totally wrong. There is no evidence that Richard had a hunchback, and no evidence that he murdered his nephews, the Princes in the Tower. As Sir Winston Churchill wrote in his 'History of the English Speaking Peoples': 'No-one in his lifetime seems to have remarked on these deformities, but they are now very familiar to us through Shakespeare's play.' Although there is currently a memorial plaque in Leicester Cathedral where he may have once been buried, it is more likely that his body was moved during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. One tradition has it that his body was thrown into the nearby River Soar, which means it could have ended up anywhere. He may have ended up in Leicestershire, but probably not in Leicester. So Richard's exact place of burial is unkown. 1483 1485
